Wayne Rooney far from impressive as United looses to Liverpool
The 29th day of the Barclays Premier League is over, and Manchester United are still first of the table with 65 points. Nevertheless, their seven points lead at the top was reduced to four after they suffered a surprising 4-1 home defeat to Liverpool on Saturday.
Earlier, United seemed poised for a payback against the Merseyside Reds as Sir Alex Ferguson’s first choice team was put into action. Fergie’s side looked similar to the one that eliminated Inter Milan from the Champions League, however this time around, Paul Scholes was side-lined and Wayne Rooney was given back his striking position.
Knowing the importance of the game, Rooney played the full 90 minutes in search of goals and glory; yet in the end, his performance left most of his fans disappointed rather than amazed.
The number 10 striker didn’t manage to put his side ahead in the early minutes of the game, nor was he able to set up one of his teammate for an early lead – and with Rafa’s boys inflicting pressure, things seemed harder for him to control.
However, the English man got a boost of confidence midway through the first half after his team was awarded a penalty, which was converted by the number 7 Cristiano Ronaldo. Unfortunately, Torres made the game level again on the stroke of half time.
In the second half, things got worse after Steven Gerrard gave his side the lead by scoring a penalty, but this did not stop Rooney from pressing on. The number 10 striker kept calling for balls, hoping to turn things around, but he just couldn’t find the back of the net.
As the match went on, United were reduced to ten men after Nemanja Vidic was sent off. Quickly after that, they were punished by Liverpool’s defender Aurelio who scored the third goal for his side. Then, in the dying minutes, Dossena buried the game.
Rooney knew that the Theatre of Dreams had been turned into a Theatre of Nightmares…
Moreover, he surely realized that a better display from him might have minimized the humiliation.
Nonetheless, everything is not over yet – but as the title race becomes hotter, Wayne will need to prove to the public that the great form he recently showed is not on the verge of fading out.
