Rooney's bad day
It was another disappointing weekend for Manchester United after they suffered their second consecutive loss in the Premiership away to Fulham. They were beaten 2-0 by the Londoners and Rooney fans did not feel less hurt than the complete Red Devils supporters, as the striker was forced to leave the pitch before the final whistle.
Hours before the game, Rooney seemed willing to help his side put in action what they learnt from their recent defeat against Liverpool, but unlike many people expected, he wasn’t given the chance to start.
Instead, Wayne was left on the bench as a substitute and the least he could do was to encourage his teammate to snatch and keep a lead that would secure the three points. Nevertheless, Fulham looked favored in the beginning of the match.
Around the 18th minute of the game, Paul Scholes made a clear handball on the goal line, which gave the home side a penalty. Nonetheless, his mistake cost him even more dearly when he was shown a straight red card.
For the second time in a row, United were reduced to ten men.
In the second half, manager Sir Alex Ferguson decided to add a little bit more composure and strength to his side, and of course, this couldn’t have been done without the inclusion of Wayne Rooney in the team.
Indeed, the talisman’s presence powered the Mancunians, enabling them to look more aggressive and attacking.
Undoubtedly, Wazza’s positivism gave the away crowd some hope, but anguish quickly occupied their hearts again when United conceded for a second time, and their number 10 striker got his name into the referee’s book.
In the dying minutes of the game, rush became the referee’s main concern. However, Fergie’s boys had no time to waste – avoiding a defeat was their only target. Unfortunately, Rooney’s impatience to take a free kick really annoyed the match official and controversially, he was shown his second yellow card of the afternoon.
In the end, 9-men United lost the game. The gap at the top of the Premier League is now caught to a single point after Liverpool smashed Aston Villa 5-0 at Anfield on Sunday. Even though Manchester United have a game-in-hand, each player available for the next game will have to give his all to break the curse that is already spreading in the club.
