Rooney watches his former club Everton eliminate Manchester United from the FA Cup

Manchester United’s match against Everton on Sunday was definitely a game that everybody was awaiting. Both sides knew how difficult the game was going to be, and with the Mancunians scoring only two goals in two league games against the Merseyside Blues, United’s manager Alex Ferguson was looking for a change in the result this time.

Well, he certainly surprised everyone when decided to make a starting line-up which excluded his best players. The fans had then no more reasons to imagine Ronaldo or Wayne Rooney entertain them.

Anyway, the game didn’t happen to present any goals from either side after the first forty-five minutes. In the second half, Berbatov was brought in to strengthen the attack, however, the match was still goalless… The least Wayne Rooney could do, was to watch from the stands.

A few minutes from time, United were supposed be awarded a penalty, but the referee ignored it. After a goalless 90 minutes, there was another goalless extra-time. It was then time for penalties.

When Cahill placed his shot over the bar, many thought that United were going to emulate the glorious moment they had in the Carling Cup final. Nevertheless, after Berbatov missed his shot, United lost control.

The match then ended 4-2 on penalties in favor of Everton, making Ferguson’s dream of winning the quintuple, an illusion.

So, Manchester United are now of the FA Cup, but they still have two more titles to fight for: the league title, and the Champions League trophy. Certainly, the team’s top players would always be of great help.
