Manchester United couldn’t get the perfect night yesterday, as they drew 2-2 with Portuguese giants FC Porto, at Old Trafford. However, their survival mainly came trough the great influence of one man: Wayne Rooney.
In the beginning of the match, United didn’t look comfortable. Porto took the lead in the 4th minute after Rodriguez’s shot curled into the corner of the net.
United then thought that they were going to suffer again, but a terrible mistake from the Porto defense allowed Wayne Rooney to find himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Rooney knew it was no time to miss – he scuffed the ball past Helton to level the game to 1-1.
In the second half, Wazza almost scored a second goal when he looped the ball from a distance of 25 yards, but the goalie was at Porto’s rescue.
A few minutes from time, United were given a throw-in. As the ball reached Rooney, the English man made a magnificent back heel to Tevez who scored what could have been the winner.
However, Porto refused to give up. In the last minute of normal time, Madriano’s shot beat Van der Sar to get his side back into the game; 2-2 was the final score line.
In the end, Manchester United fans can be disappointed that their team failed to prevent the visitors from getting two away goals. Nevertheless, it is a different story all together for Rooney fans. On the contrary, they can be proud that their player was able to bounce back from his recent poor form by showing a valuable great display.
